1. Weight and crash energy
Electric vehicles are dramatically heavier than their gas equivalents — battery packs add hundreds to thousands of pounds. In a collision between an EV and a lighter vehicle, a pedestrian, or a cyclist, that extra mass translates directly into crash energy and injury severity. Severity drives damages: more serious injuries mean larger medical costs, longer recovery, and higher-value claims. It also means minimum-limits policies run out even faster, putting UM/UIM coverage at the center of many EV cases.
2. Battery damage, fires, and total losses
Lithium-ion battery packs sit low in the chassis and are expensive to inspect and replace. Even moderate collisions can compromise a pack, and a compromised pack can ignite — sometimes hours or days after the crash. Practical consequences:
- Vehicles total out faster. When a battery pack is suspect, repair costs can exceed vehicle value even with modest visible damage.
- Storage and handling matter. Damaged EVs are stored with spacing and monitoring precautions; a delayed fire that destroys evidence — or causes new injuries — creates its own liability questions.

3. Quiet operation and pedestrians
EVs at low speed are nearly silent. Federal rules now require artificial pedestrian-alert sounds at low speeds on newer vehicles, but parking lots, driveways, and crosswalks are where the silence problem lives. For pedestrians and cyclists — who rely on hearing a car before seeing it — a quiet vehicle plus an inattentive driver is a dangerous combination. Fault analysis is unchanged (drivers must exercise due care toward pedestrians under A.R.S. § 28-794), but witness expectations and driver awareness arguments play out differently when the vehicle makes no sound.
4. The car is a witness: EV data
Modern EVs log rich telemetry — speed, braking, steering input, driver-assistance status, sometimes camera footage — far beyond a traditional event data recorder. That data can prove speed and braking precisely, and in cases involving driver-assistance features (adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, partial automation), it shows what the system and the human were each doing at impact.
Two things follow. First, preservation letters must go out fast — data retention varies, and some of it lives with the manufacturer, not in the car. Second, when a driver-assistance feature behaved unexpectedly, the case may involve both the driver's negligence and questions about the technology itself.
What to do after an EV crash in Arizona
- Treat any EV with visible underbody or battery damage as a fire risk — keep distance and tell responders it's electric.
- Photograph everything, including the other car's make/model and any driver-assistance branding.
